Increasing p2p Download Speeds( Optimized for BSNL DataOne users )
Hello! All BSNL Dataone users (maybe others too)!
If you have been experiencing frequent problems relating to downloads then I hope I can help you through this post.
Yes, it is true that when there comes the question of downloading data from a p2p source, BSNL proves to be really pathetic. But still… the speed is OK during the non-unlimited hours. From 2-8 am it may sometimes come down to a painstaking rate of 16 kb/s also. I too was having the same problem uptil I got some tweaks on the net. These tips help you configure your bittorrent clients to download at faster speeds(For free rapidshare users there is no solution, obviously until you hack a premium account!)
Here are some tips to cater to your problems:
1. I would recommend all users to use the Lightweight Bittorrent client, uTorrent. Though very miniscule in size, it can still offer the functionality and speeds of other clients. In fact, it is rated No. 1 in almost all bittorrent ratings. So, let’s get started -
~ Download the Latest version of uTorrent(if beta is also available, download it) here
http://utorrent.com/
~ Double click the downloaded file. It automatically gets installed.
~ Then again double-click it if not already launched.
~ Go to Options > Preferences.
~ Under the General Tab, check Pre-allocate files.
~ Next, go to the Connection tab and check Enable UPnP port-mapping and set
the
random port to something around 40000.
~ Go to the Bandwidth and set Maximum Upload Limit to 22.
Global Maximum number of connections: between 125 and 140.
Maximum number of connected peers per torrent: 70-80.
Number of upload slots per torrent:3.
Check Use additional upload slots if upload speed < 90 %
~ Next, use the BitTorrent tab and Check the following:
Enable DHT Network
Ask Tracker for scrape information
Enable DHT for new torrents
Enable Local Peer Discovery
Enable Peer Exchange
NOTE: Enable Protocol Encryption and set it to Forced followed by
checking Allow incoming legacy connections.
~ Go to Queueing tab and set the following:
Maximum number of active torrents: 2
Maximum number of active downloads: 1
Thats it! You are done! If you expect a considerable change in the speed then go to
the second bit below.
2. By default XP allows a maximum number of 10 half-open connections which results in
slower download speeds. But fortunately, you can change it by patching your tcpip.sys.
Here is a link for tcpip.sys which controls speeds and all in windows:
http://elliottback.com/wp/archives/2006/05/15/azureus-torrent-download-speed-tips/evid4226patch223d-enzip”
The above patch removes any half-open TCP/IP connection limitations in Windows XP SP2(Remember, don’t patch some other OS!)that is, it modifies it from 10 to somewhere around 50. This is a very reliable tool for increasing your transfer rates. But still I don’t take any responsibility if there is any damage to your OS, as this involves replacement of system files.
3. Alternatively, if you use Azureus, these instructions might help boosting up your download speeds: Azureus Wiki
NOTE: For direct downloads you can use Internet download Manager or Flashget to boost up your
speeds considerably.
So, good luck downloading!! Hope my instructions help you!

Hey! Thanks a lot for the tips. You mention a tcp/ip patch for XP. Where can I find a working one for vista? I do have xp, but I have my torrent files half done on vista. So shifting over I guess will make me re download all over again, right? Please help me out with the patch for vista! Thanks in advance.
Hello!I am BSNL broadband user.I was having problem of downloading speed.Thx 4 ur advice it really boosted my speed.
Thank u very much.
@bk: I feel sorry to say that there is only a patch for XP.
And yes, you can download from half as well.
Just use the same .torrent file in XP to download and pause the download at about 1%. Exit uTorrent. Then copy the one you have downloaded in Vista to the directory where you freshly downloaded the same file in XP.
After 2-3 restarts you will see it done the same amount as it did in Vista!
It helped & worked like charm..So nice of You man
I am happy for you. You are always welcome for any questions.
Thx man..Ur advice really helped a lot. Thank u very much.
You are always welcome friend, I consider it my pleasure.
hey thanks a ton mate ..this significantly increased my speeds ….cheers
ps why dont u edit the elliotback link so that it functions as a hyperlink….
You are always welcome friend! And yes, I am changing that to a hyperlink.
hiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Hello! Whats up?
hey i just applied the steps mentioned to my bit torrent software.
But there seems to be no increase in the download speed.
In fact the download speed has reduced.
I had been gettin a speed of around 30 kb/sec (max.)
whereas after applying your steps the speed has reduced to about 21 kb/sec
Please help….
Thats a strange thing, are you sure you are working on Windows XP Service Pack 2 ?
i used your trick of utorrent but i do not have speed above the 5-10 kbps. i have bsnl home 750UL plan with 250 kbps. so what can i do for getting downloading speed above 50-100 kbps?
Just disable “Randomize port each time I start” in utorrent. And set the port to somewhere between 55000 and 62500.
If you still face any problem, dont hesitate to let me know.
Thanks a lot for this.
I actually use Linux (Ubuntu) and not Windows. So I installed uTorrent on wine just to see what kinda speeds it gives me after I do the stuff mentioned by you. And BOY! My speeds shot up by over 300%!!!
What kinda increase did you get?
In my home the speed increased by 80 kbps and here in college it increased by almost 200 kbps.
Thanks for the help. But i wanted to ask that cant i set maximum no. of active torrents more than 2.Plz Reply i will b waiting.
Yes, Murtuza you can do that. But see, when you are downloading files using a torrent client, you bandwidth gets divided and you may not get full speed consistently on all the torrents. Thats why I advised you to restrict it to 2 or 3.
Hi Supratim! How much did your bandwidth improve after all this???
The speed increased by almost 80 kbps.
It will only come back to normal if you have created a restore point before doing all this.
And please change your attitude. I am leaving you for the first time. Mind your language!!!
